If you’ve ever glanced at the site logo and thought, “Wait… why does Roger have a unicorn up there?” — well, I’m glad you asked.

Once upon a time (cue medieval lute music), I was heavily involved in a historical reenactment group. Think swords, armor, camping with thousands of people, and a whole lot of eating, drinking, and dressing like it was 1409. It was an exciting chapter of my life where I dove headfirst into the world of chivalry, heraldry, and combat — all while wearing funny clothes.

As part of that community, I earned enough recognition and awards to be styled “The Honorable Lord” — a title that came with the right to bear a personal coat of arms. Mine? It looked a little something like this:

“Per saltire sable and argent, in pale two unicorn’s heads couped and in fess two rapiers all counterchanged.”

In plain English: black swords, symmetry, and silver unicorns.

Even though I’ve since retired the garb and stopped poking people with a rapier, the unicorn stuck around. It’s more than just a relic of my reenactment days — it’s become a symbol of who I am.

I’m a unicorn in the tech world: a broadly experienced technologist who’s done everything from help desk support to high-level management. I’ve worked at companies big and small, switched from the individual contributor track to leadership (and back again a few times), and brought a uniquely human approach to every step of the journey.

Personally? I’m a rehabilitated night owl, a former Republican turned staunch Democrat, and not nearly as misanthropic as I once was. Progress, right?

The unicorn reminds me that transformation is not only possible — it’s essential. It represents change, individuality, and the willingness to be a little unexpected. That’s me, in a nutshell.

So, yeah. That’s why the unicorn.
